Tom's Latest Gold Separation Figure

I asked Tom to add gold PES separations of NPs to his earlier figure and to evaluate the loss of NPs during the use of these filters compared to pnc-Si. Here is what he came up  …

Picture 59

All experiments (including pnc-Si) were done at 10 PSI with 200 ul of starting material above the membrane run until approximately 100 ul had passed.  100K PES does let anything pass while 300K PES lets everything pass except for 40nm.

Tom calculated the loss based on the volumes and concentrations above and below the membrane. For pnc-Si the loss is always less than 5% (nothing lost within our limit of detection). This is not surprising since there is nowhere to trap the particles. For 100K PES the loss is ~ 12% at 10 nm. For 300K PES 22% of the 30 nm particles were lost and 47% of the 40 nm particles were lost.
